Remembering John Peck [1942–2025], a.k.a. The Mad Peck, Doctor Oldie, and co-producer of Comix: A History of Comic Books in America
"Y'know, one of the nicest things about being on the air, as opposed to being up in the air, is that radio waves go out in all directions to infinity. So some night, centuries from now, far, far away in another galaxy, an alien being will be driving around with his date in his flying saucer, and he just might punch the button on his audio unit and get the sound of my voice. Now if that ain't immortality, I'll take tootsie-frootsie."
— DR. OLDIE, on the final episode of The Giant Juke Box, Saturday, Sept. 4, 1983.
THE LEGENDARY Dr. OLDIE
John “The Mad” Peck developed an on-air deejay personality, Dr. Oldie, an identity he embraced for his WBRU Sunday night radio show, “The Giant Juke Box,” and one he extended into his record collectors show pursuits. And the record spinner didn’t do it alone, as he allied himself with “Big Al” Pavlow and fellow “University of Music Perversity” alumni!
